Celebrate St. Patty’s at Mallory Square

Mallory Square is a great place to celebrate any holiday, as you may have noticed from our Valentine’s Day, New Year’s, and Christmas-themed articles.  St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th is no different. This year, celebrate St. Patty’s at Mallory Square and around Rockville. Just don’t forget to wear green!

Decorate, Drink & Dine at Home

Stay home and make your Mallory Square apartment a festive place to get together with your friends for some holiday food and drink.

First, add some green to your apartment with this simple DIY tutorial for turning  hurricane glasses into elegant candleholders. Place the glasses on your dining room table as a perfect centerpiece.

You can also decorate with free printables like these, which you can easily print on photo paper, cut to size, and place inside of a stylish picture frame. Put them around your apartment for your get-together.

Make a frame photo booth for your friends to take cheesy pictures in. It’s a fun icebreaker when you have guests who don’t know each other, and always makes people laugh.

Dine & Drink

St. Patrick’s Day can’t be celebrated without some delicious cocktails to accompany your inevitable supply of Guinness beer. This green cocktail is sweet and particularly pretty when decorated with flecks of edible gold.

For a little sugar, brownies are already a pretty perfect treat. But you can make them ideal for the holiday with a little bit of Guinness. This recipe for Guinness Extra Stout Brownies is sure to please your guests.

Also try this mini Shepherd’s Pie for a traditional Irish treat that’s also easy for guests to pick up and eat.

Enjoy a Parade

The Gaithersburg St. Patrick’s Day Parade is located at the Rio Washingtonian Center, just a mile from Mallory Square. The parade will include Celtic dancers, bagpipers, and antique cars. Don’t forget to enjoy the live entertainment to follow on the Lakefront Plaza. The parade will take place on Saturday, March 14th.

Run a Race

You could head to Bethesda for an actual St. Patrick’s Day-themed race, or enjoy The Lucky Leprechaun Virtual Run, a 5k, 10k or half marathon that can be completed any time between March 14th and 22nd. Pledge to run a certain distance in your hometown, complete the run, and receive a medal by mail.

All proceeds raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. This is a fun activity to do with your friends, and enjoy the beauty of Rockville. Try completing the run on the very green Carl Henn Millenium Trail, which you can easily access from the Thomas Farm Community Center just a 10-minute walk away.

Pub Crawl

American Tap Room at Rockville Town Center hosted a great St. Patrick’s Day celebration in 2014, making it a four-day event that offered Guinness on draft, Irish fare, a buffet, and food and drink specials. We expect more of the same to come!

Gordon Biersch is also located at Rockville Town Center. This brewery is likely to have many festive holiday specials, as well as their usual variety of craft beers.

Restaurants may host specials the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day, in addition to the holiday itself.  If you prefer a more low-key Tuesday night, enjoy the evening at home with friends. Either way, take advantage of several days of festive food, drink, and fun, all in and around Mallory Square. Explore Rockville’s many opportunities for celebration today!
