Springtime Activities for Pets (and Their People)

Spring is in the air, which means there’s no excuse for staying in and cuddling under blankets with your pet (at least not all day). Your Chihuahua doesn’t need that coat anymore, and you can take those snow booties off the pug. Celebrate the warm weather with your furry friend, and enjoy the many activities in and around Rockville for dogs that deserve a day out. And don’t forget that there may be April showers, but our Mallory Square residents don’t need to be concerned about mud. The pet spa on-site has three dog-washing stations, so you and your pet can play and get dirty without worry. Ready for the best springtime activities for pets?

Pet Events

Paws in the Park – Walk for a cause at this one-mile dog walk and pet festival in Gaithersburg. Proceeds from the event go to homeless and abandoned animals in Montgomery County. All you need to do is register online to attend, then show up and enjoy beautiful Bohrer Park. You can also enter your dog in a contest or game, watch a demonstration, and check out over 50 different vendors.  This event takes place on April 26th from noon to 4 pm.

Free Puppy Playtime – Every Saturday, Petco will be hosting a 30-minute puppy get- together, where puppies between the ages of 8 weeks old and six months can safely socialize with dogs and people. Learn about proper puppy training and development as well! This is a great event for anyone who has recently purchased a pet.

Adoption Days at Bark! – Saturdays are also big days at your local Bark! store, in both Rockville and Gaithersburg. If you’ve been itching to get a pet, spring is a great time to do so!

Attend one of Bark!’s Saturday adoption days. The Gaithersburg location will have a Greyhound Adoption Event in the month of April, and a Golden Retriever Rescue event at the very beginning of May. The Rockville location will give you a chance to rescue a cat in need at their PetConnect Rescue Cat Adoption Event.

Al Fresco Dining with the Dogs

Don’t make your dog enjoy a nice spring day from inside. If you’re heading out for a casual lunch or dinner, bring your best friend along (and maybe slip him or her a piece of bread at the restaurant). Popular nearby restaurants like Thai Farm, Mama Lucia, Fontina Grill, and Moby Dick all have outdoor seating with a patio open to pets.

Pet Priorities

Gunny’s Rainbow Swimming – Exercise is key to maintaining your dog’s health, so bring your dog to this unique facility in Bethesda to help him or her recover from any mobility problems. Dogs are also brought here for aquatic assistance with post-surgery recovery.

King Farm Dog Park – This fenced-in recreation area is restricted to Rockville residents with licensed dogs, so you know it’s a safe and secure environment for your precious pooch. Drinking fountains for dogs, and a cleaning station are both on site.

Your Dog’s Friend – If your dog isn’t well behaved enough to enjoy excursions to the park with you, consider this local school with classes on “Basic Manners,” instruction aimed at “Fearful Dogs,” obedience lessons, and even a session called “Play & Games for Small Dogs.”

Spending time with your furry pal is just another way to enjoy nice weather and get out of the house. So next time your dog whines to go out on another perfect spring day, now you know exactly what to do, and where to go! And if you’re looking for the perfect pet-friendly apartments in Rockville, you know who to call.
